Sophia Beal is an assistant professor in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese Studies at the University of Minnesota. Her research focuses on literary and cultural analysis within the Portuguese-speaking world, primarily analyzing questions related to public space, identity, and urban development. Her book Brazil under Construction: Fiction and Public Works was published by Palgrave Macmillan in 2013. She has published articles in the Luso-Brazilian Review, Hispania, Revista Escritos, Pensares em Revista, and other academic journals, as well as contributing chapters about Lusophone literature to critical editions. She earned her PhD in Portuguese and Brazilian Studies from Brown University in 2010. From 2010 to 2012, she was a Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow in the Humanities at Tulane University in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, affiliated with the Program for African and African Diaspora Studies.
